Love them or hate them, Wal-Mart is one of the most frequently shopped stores in the nation. More importantly, other corporations pay big attention to what the retail giant does. This means a number of things for their latest campaign, which is a joint effort with Pedigree Dog Foods. Pedigree has put QR codes on more than two hundred thousand dog food bags that are intended to be sold only at Wal-Mart stores.
The benefits of the campaign? For Wal-Mart, this may be enough to bring hesitant pet owners back to their stores and away from pet-specific stores. For Pedigree, it shows off their love of animals and their dedication to helping out pets in need. The biggest winners, however, are dogs themselves. For every QR code that is scanned, Pedigree will donate a bowl of food to shelter dogs.
September is considered to be “Pets Love Wal-Mart” month, and this campaign certainly helps the company market themselves as pet friendly. Using the QR code on these bags will also take shoppers to more details about the promotion, including demos being held in many cities as well as videos about Pedigree’s products.
The campaign isn’t entirely unique in terms of what the QR codes do, but it is certainly likely to be a success. Wal-Mart has millions of loyal customers, many of whom are pet owners. The drive will serve to help bolster Wal-Mart’s image for these consumers, to help Pedigree’s image as a company that truly cares about animals, to feed shelter pets, and of course, to help further increase awareness of QR and what it can do. Wal-Mart is a huge corporation, and while it is not one that is usually seen as a technological leader, it is certainly a company that every business watches. If they are pushing QR codes and getting great results, there is little doubt that more big companies will keep following suit.
